What is dummy data for Excel?

Dummy data (also called sample data, fake data or random data) is made-up information shaped like real business data. It lets you practice Excel formulas, PivotTables, charts and Power Query without touching a real company file. This generator creates a ready-to-use worksheet in seconds, so you can skip the search for a practice dataset and start working.

Types of sample datasets you can generate

Pick any of these dataset types in the tool above:

Random data for Excel practice: what to try

Once you have generated a dataset, use it to practice the skills that come up most often at work:

  • Summarize it with a PivotTable and a PivotChart
  • Total it by region, product or month with SUMIFS and COUNTIFS
  • Look up values with XLOOKUP or INDEX and MATCH
  • Build a chart or a simple dashboard
  • Calculate variance, averages and growth rates

Messy data for cleaning practice

Real data is rarely tidy. Turn on the messiness option and the generator adds blanks, duplicate rows, inconsistent date formats and mixed casing. Use it to practice removing duplicates, fixing dates, standardizing text and cleaning a table with Power Query.

Download as an Excel (.xlsx) or CSV file

Every dataset downloads as an Excel workbook (.xlsx) or as a CSV file. Use the .xlsx file for Excel practice. Use the .csv file when you need test data for another tool or want to practice importing a CSV into Excel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create dummy data in Excel?

The fastest way is to use the generator on this page: choose a dataset type, set the number of rows, pick your columns and click Generate dataset. You can also build random data inside Excel with functions such as RANDBETWEEN and RAND, but you have to set up each column yourself.

Is this sample data generator free?

Yes. The generator is free to use.

Can I download random data as a CSV file?

Yes. After you generate a dataset, choose Download .csv. You can also download the same data as an .xlsx workbook.

Can I add my own columns?

Yes. Add a custom field and the tool fills it automatically based on the name. For example, a field called “Email”, “Price” or “Date” gets matching values. Any other name gets generic text.

How do I get messy data to practice cleaning in Excel?

Switch on “Add real-world mess” before you generate the dataset. It adds blanks, duplicate rows, inconsistent date formats and mixed casing, which is useful for practicing data cleaning and Power Query.

Is this data real?

No. All data is randomly generated and fictional, so it is meant for practice, demos, training and testing.
