Excel Shortcuts Game: Practice Keyboard Shortcuts Free

Learn Excel keyboard shortcuts by playing. In Shortcut Sprint you get an action, such as “Jump to cell A1”, and press the matching shortcut before the timer runs out. Choose Windows or Mac, pick the categories you want to practice, and see how long your streak can last.

How the Excel shortcuts game works

  1. Choose your keyboard: Windows or Mac.
  2. Pick the shortcut categories you want to practice.
  3. Select Start sprint. An Excel action appears on screen.
  4. Press the matching keyboard shortcut before the timer bar runs out.
  5. Build a streak. Every streak of five raises your score multiplier.
  6. The sprint ends when you miss three, or when you choose End sprint early.

When the sprint ends, the game shows how many questions you answered, how many were correct, your best streak and your final score, so you can try to beat your personal best.

Excel shortcut categories you can practice

The game includes nearly 40 of the most useful Excel shortcuts, grouped into seven categories:

  • Navigation: for example, Ctrl+Home jumps to cell A1
  • Editing: for example, F2 edits the active cell and Ctrl+D fills down
  • Formatting: for example, Ctrl+1 opens the Format Cells dialog
  • Formulas: for example, F4 cycles a reference between relative and absolute
  • Data tools: for example, Ctrl+T turns a range into an Excel Table
  • Charts: for example, F11 creates a chart on a new sheet
  • Rows and sheets: for example, Ctrl+9 hides the selected rows

Windows and Mac Excel shortcuts

Many Excel shortcuts change on a Mac. Ctrl+Home on Windows becomes Cmd+Home on a Mac, and F11 becomes Fn+F11. Switch between Windows and Mac before you start so you practice the shortcuts for your own keyboard.

Keep practicing Excel

Once you know your shortcuts, put them to work. Write real formulas in Formula Lab, generate a practice dataset with the Excel Sample Data Generator, or see more practice tools on the Learn with Fun page.
